Piazza dei Signori
Beautiful market square near the cathedral
Padua’s former power centre of power. Despite its inconspicuous location and the fact that it is a bit smaller than the big market around the Palazzo della Ragione, the little market on the Piazza dei Signori also has its special charm. Especially nice are the two palaces just off the piazza, the Palazzo del Capitano and the Loggia della Gran Guardia from the 16th and 15th centuries respectively. While the Venetians ruled over Padua in the Palazzo del Capitano, the Austrians ruled in the Loggia della Gran Guardia, which was the headquarters of the Austrian army.
