Unadorned cathedral with beautiful baptistery
The present cathedral of Padua dates back in its origins to the 4th century AD. In 1117, the church was destroyed by a severe earthquake and rebuilt. In 1551 Michelangelo was commissioned to build a magnificent cathedral. The construction works lasted until 1754, but the facade was left unfinished to this day. The interior of the dome is relatively unspectacular, but is most impressed on account of its size.
Far more interesting and worth seeing, however, is the connected baptistery right of the cathedral. It dates from the 12th century and is decorated with magnificent frescoes. The frescoes are considered to be masterpieces by Giusto de Menbouoi and depict scenes from the life of Jesus, Mary and John the Baptist.
