Mighty fortress on the southern tip of Syracuse

The Castello Maniace Is located at the extreme southern tip of Ortigia. It goes back to the Byzantine general George Maniaces who commissioned its building. The castle owes its present appearance to the Hohenstaufen emperor Frederick II, who had converted and strengthened it. The square fort has been restored and can be visited.
