The Archaeological Museum in Syracuse

The Archaeological Museum of Syracuse is located in the Villa Landolina - approximately 300 metres from the Archaeological Park. This fascinating museum is undoubtedly the most beautiful and probably the most important museum in Sicily. Countless valuable and sensational exhibits from Syracuse and the surrounding provinces of Agrigento and Gela are presented here in four main areas. In the garden there is a Protestant cemetery - among the tombs is the tomb of the German poet August von Platen.

Pre-and Early History - Section A

In Section A you can find geological aspects of Sicily and finds from the Palaeontology, Old and New Stone Age and Bronze Age. The particular focus is on the Bronze Age and the Hyblean Mountains west of Syracuse. You can observe many sensational finds from the necropolis Pantàlica and also from other cemeteries. What is particularly interesting are three different burial options (stone box, bare soil and clay pot), which were discovered in the necropolis at Madonna del Piano near Granmichele.

Syracuse and its colonies - Section B + C

Section B shows the Greek period of the cities of Syracuse, Megara Hyblea and Naxos. Numerous beautiful artefacts are on display here. The most impressive find is a large-breasted Venus, just nursing her twins. The history of the city of Syracuse is also interesting. Section C deals with the daughter towns and the surrounding Greek strongholds Agrigento and Gela and provides a deeper insight into the Greek era in Sicily.

Syracuse in Hellenistic and Roman times - Section D

Section D is the youngest section and is located on the first floor. The exhibition here is primarily focused on the Hellenistic and Roman period of the city. The most important exhibit is the "Venus Anadyomene" (Venus risen from the sea). The Roman sculpture of a female nude deity was created after a Hellenistic model. The beautiful sarcophagus of Adelphia from the catacombs of San Giovanni can also be seen here.
