Papyrus Museum
History of the oldest writing material in Europe
Papyrus is originally from Egypt and is the oldest writing material of the ancient world. The southern coast of Sicily is the only place in Europe where papyrus grows - today you can admire some papyrus sheets at the Fonte Aretusa in the city centre.
The Papyrus Museum itself is located on the peninsula Ortigia and has information in several of the exhibition rooms on the production and use of the ancient writing material.
