Pachino
Baroque town in southern Sicily
Almost in the extreme southeast corner of Sicily you will find the small wine town of Pachino. The small town lives mainly off of agriculture - the wine and the church tomatoes (Pomodorini di Pachino) are among the main products of Pachino. Pachino is worth a visit especially because of its architecture. The small town was completely destroyed by the great earthquake in 1693 and, along with Noto, Avola and Granmichele, redesigned from scratch. The result is an orthogonal street grid and a baroque city centre around the main square. The baroque church Santissimo Crocifisso, from the 18th Century, is located directly in the main square.
