Cava Grande del Cassibile
Deep gorge and daytrip destination in the Hyblean Mountains
Approximately 16 kilometres north-west of Ávola, the river Cassibile forms a 10 km long and up to 250 metres deep gorge - the Cava Grande del Cassibile. The entire canyon is a popular hiking destination in the summer months. During the hike you can visit three idyllic lakes for swimming and countless tombs of a Siculi necropolis. It makes sense both to take a trip to the Cava Grande and to visit the ruins of the old Ávola Vecchia, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1693. A daytrip, swimming or hiking trip is also recommended.
