Beautiful mountain town in the heart of Sicily
Nicosia is a pretty little mountain town which is grouped around several hilltops around a former Norman castle, which was built by Roger I after his victory here over the Arabs. Worth seeing in the centre is the Cathedral of San Nicola with its Gothic facade and the beautiful painted roof beams. Inside the church, there are sculptures by Gagini, a stall from 1622 and a crucifix by Umile da Petralia from the 17th Century. Also worth seeing is the church of Santa Maria Maggiore. The baroque church contains a marble polyptych by Gagini and the throne of Charles V. A final sight worth visiting is the Dominican church of San Vincenzo Ferreri. In the interior you can admire the ceiling fresco "The Trinity crowns the holy Vinzenz Ferrer" by Guglielmo Borremans.
