Mythical lake in the heart of Sicily
Lake Pergusa, which is often dry in the hot summer months, is located about 10 kilometres south of Enna. According to a legend, the lake was the place where Hades kidnapped Persephone and brought her to the underworld. As a reaction, her mother Demeter let the land wither and enforced the return of her daughter in spring and in the summer months. This legend developed into one of the great ancient vegetation cults.
You can’t see very much of the once-picturesque lake today because a race track runs around the 2.2-km-long and 1-km-wide lake. However, anyone who is interested in Greek mythology should still stop here briefly.
