San Pietro in Montorio
Renaissance church and temple
San Pietro in Montorio (Church of St. Peter on the Goldberg) was built in the 15th Century by King Ferdinand IV exactly at that place, where St. Peter was crucified according to legend. There are some paintings worth seeing in the church, which was designed by Baccio Pontelli. In the chapels on the right side you will see "The Flagellation of Christ" by Sebastiano del Piombo, the "Madonna with the letter" by Pomarancio and "The Conversion of St. Paul" by Giorgio Vasari. The second chapel on the left was designed by Bernini and the "Crucifixion of Saint Peter" in the apse is the copy of the painting by Guido Reni.
In the courtyard on the right side there is a small columns temple by Bramante from the 16th Century. It was built in commemoration of the Crucifixion of St. Peter. With its antique design it is a model of the Roman High Renaissance.
