Sant'Andrea della Valle
Beautiful church with a large central dome
The church of Sant'Andrea della Valle, the Church of the Theatines, was, in terms of its structure, inspired by the Jesuit Church Il Gesù. The magnificent two-story travertine façade impresses the visitor as well as the grand interior with numerous side chapels, transepts, chorus and apses. The massive central dome, which rises high above the church, is incidentally the second largest in Rome. Inside, the two pope tombs from the family of Piccolomini are worth a visit. In front of the left transept is the grave of Pius II (1464), and on the right the tomb of Pius III (1503). Both popes were relocated to the church from St. Peter’s Basilica in 1614.
