Palazzo della Sapienza
Roman main university with beautiful palace chapel
The three-story Palazzo della Sapienza was created in 1587 by Giacomo della Porta in the order of Pope Sixtus V. Until 1935, it was the headquarters of the "Sapienza", the University of Rome, which was founded in 1303 by Pope Boniface VII. Today it houses the State Archive. In the courtyard of the palace is the small Gothic chapel Sant'Ivo. Its dome with the snail-like high white tower can be seen from many places in Rome. Its interior was designed according to the plans of Borromini and its ground plan is similar to a bee - the emblem of Pope Urban VIII.
