Museo Centrale Montemartini
Ancient sculptures in a modern setting
The Museo Centrale Montemartini is located in the former Montemartini power station that first became operational in 1912. Since 1997, the shut down factory houses parts of the collection of the Capitoline Museums. The combination of ancient art and modern technology result here in an especially delightful mixture. Antique white marble statues and sculptures pose here between black diesel engines, giant boilers and large metal pipes. Highlights of the museum include the pediment figures of the ancient temple of Apollo Sosiano. Of particular interest is the beautiful blend of art and technology in the engine room, where the ancient marble sculptures are exhibited between the two huge diesel engines.
