Crypta Balbi
Underground crypt with museum
The Crypta Balbi was once an extension of the theatre of Lucio Cornelio Balbo from the year 13 B.C. The current building includes a nice museum on three floors and clearly shows the development of the city from ancient times to the 20th Century. First it was part of the Campus Martius of Augustus, then theatre and crypt of Balbo, monastery from the 8th Century, apartment in the Middle Ages, conservatory of prostitutes in the 16th Century and finally museum - along with the exhibition, the Crypta Balbi spans an impressive temporal arc through history.
