Este
Place of Interest
Este
Headquarter of the Este family
Este was the former headquarters of the House of Este. The name of the noble family, which was very influential throughout northern Italy, traces its origins to the river Adige. The remains of the medieval castle are still well preserved and can be visited in the city centre. Right next to the castle there is the Archaeological Museum (Museo Nazionale Atestino), which is stocked with numerous exhibits from Roman times and the Middle Ages.
Another highlight is the cathedral in Este. While its exterior unfortunately has not been completed, it is the only baroque church in Italy, with an oval ground plan. The beautiful altar inside, "The holy Thekla asks God for the liberation of the town of Este from the plague", is by Tiepolo. The small church of San Martino with its crooked steeple is also worth visiting.
