Montegiardino
Small community with rich history
Montegiardino, located in the southwest of San Marino, is the republic’s smallest community with an area of 3.31 km² and only 910 inhabitants. It borders on the Italian province of Pesaro and Urbino. However, Montegiardino shouldn’t be overlooked, if merely for its rich history. The community was presumably founded by the Langobards or the Romans. Before passing into San Marino’s ownership in 1463, Montegiardino initially belonged to the Count of Carpegna from the province of Pesaro and Urbino before moving into possession of the Malatesta family from Rimini. A defence tower was located on the chalk rock in medieval times, which today is the site of the church Chiesa di San Lorenzo built in 1647. The associated, detached bell tower, the Campanile, was not completed until 1890. The high altar of the church, which was reconditioned in 1856, features a statue of Saint Marinus by Adamo Tadolini.
