Rimini city walk
A tour with Rimini’s most beautiful sights
Being one of the most important cities in Emilia Romagna with rich history and generously developed beach tourism, Rimini is one of the region’s most interesting places. Rimini is always worth a trip, no matter how much time is at hand for this wonderful city. The Roman and Malatesta heritage wonderfully brings out Rimini’s contrasts when taking a walk along the extensive seafront past one of about 250 public bathing beaches, the so-called bagni. No matter whether there are only a few hours or a full weekend of time available – Rimini has to be experienced.
Brief city tour through Rimini
It is particularly ideal to spend a full day in Rimini in order to savour the city’s most important sights and most beautiful spots. At least half a day is necessary for the tour. A full day is of advantage for extensively seeing the enchanting sights from the inside in order to have a stress-free and relaxed tour.
- Parco Federico Fellini is perfectly suited as a starting point heading towards the historic city centre with its proximity to the train station and the tourist office.
- Passing the Grand Hotel where Fellini resided when visiting his hometown, the next stop is the fishing district of San Giuliano. The colourfully painted house walls depict Fellini and his wife as well as scenes from his movies.
- Cross Ponte di Tiberio to the central Roman historic city centre axis.
- Now continue directly to the other end of the historic city centre to Arco d’Augusto, built in 27 BC at the behest of the former Roman Emperor of the same name.
- The tour leads to Piazza Cavour, an enchanting old square framed by Palazzo dell’Arengo supported by pillars and crowned with pinnacles, and Palazzo del Podestà.
- The entrance to the old fish market, by now the new in district of Rimini, is vis-à-vis. Today, the stony Vecchia Pescheria counters go along with trendy bars and classy restaurants.
- Impressive Castel Sismondo, built on the behest of the erstwhile, culture supporting regent Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, is located behind Piazza Cavour.
- Not far from it is Tempio Malatesta, the abundant Renaissance church, which was to be Sigismondo Malatesta’s last resting-place and never got finished.
- Finally, Piazza Cavour and Piazza Tre Martini cross today’s mall and boulevard strip Corso d’Augusto, where the ancient forum used to be. Here the tour can fade out relaxed between shopping and restaurants.
Those who have more time can always extend the tour through Rimini. There is a special Fellini tour, which features, aside from a glance in the park and the Grand Hotel lobby, the legendary Cinema Fulgor and the cemetery in Rimini-Rivabella, where Fellini is buried. The city museum Museo della Città with its findings from Roman and Renaissance times, and the main place of finding, Domus del Chirurgo, are always worth a visit as well.
