Basilica di Santa Maria dei Servi
Prime example of Gothic architecture
Admittedly, the brick church built in 1346 looks fairly non-descript from the outside apart from one peculiarity. The atrium was built in the 16th century, which is pretty unusual as the classic front court lined by arcades is actually a feature of early Christian churches. The Gothic interior of Basilica di Santa Maria dei Servi with its pointed arches has its very own unique charm as well. 14th century frescoes and a marble altar by Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli, a student of Michelangelo, contribute to the special atmosphere of this church. These days the basilica is mainly used as a concert venue.
