Via Callmaggiore
The main street in historic Treviso
The Via Callmaggiore is the historic main street of Treviso. It is lined with stately homes and shops. Back in Roman times, the central street, the Cardo Maximus, led here through the Roman fort. Parts of the old road and the fort have been excavated. Access to the excavations can be obtained in the silver goods shop Argenteria Marza.
In the neighbouring passage of the Via Callmaggiore is the Galleria della Strada Romana. Here there is a replica of the famous Fonatana delle Tette: a female statue erected in 1559. From the breasts red and white wine once gushed to entertain the people after the mayoral elections. Today, clean water flows from the two well-shaped breasts. By the way, you can admire the original fountain in the Loggia dei Trecento in the palace of the same name at the Piazza dei Signori.
